BEIJING - Chinese Minister of Public Security Guo Shengkun has pledged to keep the upcoming Nanjing Youth Olympic Games safe, according to a ministry statement released on Tuesday.

Guo inspected security measures of the games in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province, on Sunday and Monday, the statement said.

Chinese police will do their best to prevent any incidents from undermining the security of the event, he said during the inspection tour.

Police will step up security in Nanjing and work to ensure "absolute safety" of venues, athletes and staff, he said.

Guo also promised to minimize the impact of heightened security on the life of local residents.

The Youth Olympic Games, for athletes aged between 15 and 18, will take place from Aug. 16 to 28.

According to the Nanjing Organizing Committee for the 2014 Youth Olympics, 3,787 athletes from 204 countries and regions have registered to compete in the games.
