Ninety-five riot police left Beijing on Friday bound for Haiti.

The group will join 30 Chinese police officers, already in Haiti since April 4, to take part in United Nations peacekeeping operations.

The total 125 officers, all from South China's Guangdong Province, will replace Chinese peacekeepers sent to the island nation last October.

The group's tour of duty will last eight months during which they will be charged with keeping public order, safeguarding VIPs and dealing with public security emergencies.

Three officers have received special training in French, the language used by the majority of Haitians.

The rest are capable of English skills.

"It is an honour to join the peace keeping force...And having such an opportunity will enrich my life experience," said one officer, who declined to be named.

According to him, the officers are all aged between 25 and 35.

"That is because the force needs experienced police," he said. At the age of 31, he has been working as a policeman in Maoming for 10 years.

According to woman officer Qi Li, they will stay at an encampment in Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital, unless they are assigned tasks elsewhere in the country.

The officers were picked from more than 1,000 police selected from Guangdong.
