Viet Nam bird flu puts Yunnan on alert

KUNMING: A 30-kilometre-wide "immune protection zone" has been set up along the border between Viet Nam and Yunnan Province in Southwest China, in a bid to stop the spread of the recent bird flu outbreak in the neighbouring country.

The move is one of a number of emergency measures taken by the local animal husbandry administration, said officials .

The provincial government has urged local customs officers and agricultural, health, import and export quarantine, public security and quality inspection departments to work together to closely monitor the latest development of the disease in Viet Nam.

Distribution of poultry and egg products in Yunnan is also under strict supervision and monitoring.

All port and entrance-exit channels are equipped with sanitizing stations, to conduct virus quarantine work and sanitize passing traffic and passengers.

All household and farmed poultry on border areas are to be immunized against the virus.

Over 20 species of migratory birds to the province this winter will also be strictly monitored, a source with the local fowl raising association said.

They are awaiting random blood sample checks starting this week.

A three-tier reporting system, involving participation of households, villages and townships, has been put in place in rural areas of Yunnan. Any incident of bird flu must be reported to a higher authority within 24 hours.

Yunnan shares a 1,200-kilometre-long border with Viet Nam.

A recurrence of bird flu has been reported in 11 localities in Viet Nam since December last year.

The latest is an 18-year-old girl from the south of Viet Nam, a suspected victim of the H5N1 virus.
