Hong Kong urged to treasure achievements

President Hu Jintao yesterday called for greater efforts to be made in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) to secure a stable environment for people-based economic development.

Hu said the central government appreciated the efforts of the regional government since Hong Kong's return to the motherland seven years ago.

The president made his remarks at a meeting with Hong Kong Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa and a group of senior officials from the SAR prior to the inauguration of the second term of Macao's Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah.

The meeting started with a briefing session by Tung on the SAR's situation. It was the first time Tung has reported on his duties outside the capital, Beijing.

Addressing the entire delegation after Tung's briefing, Hu said he had three wishes for the SAR.

"First, it is wished that, in the collective and long-term interest of Hong Kong and the country, you all can strengthen unity and be receptive and supportive of one another in order to strive for stability," Hu told the delegates.

"Second, I wish that you all can do more to start with the people while promoting the economy and work hard to safeguard the prosperity and stability of the society of Hong Kong," he said.

"Third, it is wished you can seriously review the past seven years of implementation of 'One Country, Two Systems,' 'Hong Kong people administer Hong Kong' and 'a high degree of autonomy' in the SAR. Sum up the experience and find out the deficiencies so that governance and management quality can be enhanced continuously," Hu said.

He said the overall situation of Hong Kong was heading for the good and this could not be isolated from the leadership of Tung and the concerted efforts made by officials, adding the central government affirmed this.

In a related development during the afternoon in Macao, Deputy Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, Chen Zuo'er, said the president hoped the Hong Kong government and various sectors of the community would treasure the achievements that had not come easily.
